Q: Where did you grow up?
A: I grew up in Jamaica.
Q: Prior to medical school, you worked in a free clinic and as a home health aide and held a variety of additional roles promoting the well-being of other people. Was there one particular inspiration for you to become a physician?
A: Growing up, I saw firsthand the positive impact physicians could have on their communities, and I aspired to have that same kind of impact. I was drawn to family medicine for the opportunity to care for patients not only when they are sick, but also when they are well. I also loved the prospect of caring for people throughout different stages of life – from infancy through adulthood – and building relationships with patients and families over time.
Q: Tell us about your formative experience working with rural communities abroad to raise awareness about water quality and health.
A: Through Defiance College’s McMaster School for Advancing Humanity, I participated in a community-based research initiative, an ongoing water quality project in Cambodia, for which I took responsibility during two trips to that nation. At the communities we visited, I collected samples from local water sources and tested them for common contaminants. At one monastery, for example, I tested water from the tanks and ponds that Buddhist nuns used for drinking and cooking. Following the tests, I shared the findings with members of each community to promote better understanding of how water quality impacted their health. We were also able to demonstrate the beneficial use of ceramic water filters and donated several filters to community groups. It was a meaningful opportunity to combine scientific research with practical, community-based work to improve people’s lives.
Q: What motivates or energizes you in your work as a physician?
A: What motivates me most is knowing that the work we do can make a significant difference in someone’s life. In family medicine, that may mean helping someone through an illness, preventing a future health problem, or simply being a consistent and trusted resource for them over the years. I find a great deal of purpose in building those relationships and seeing the impact of good care over time.
Q: How would you describe your approach to patient care?
A: I view the patient-physician relationship as a partnership. I want my patients to be active participants in their healthcare rather than simply bystanders. My role is to listen, provide guidance and medical expertise, and help patients make informed decisions that reflect both their health needs and what matters most to them.
Q: Do you have any areas of special interest within family medicine?
A: The breadth of family medicine is one of the things I enjoy most about this field. I value being able to care for patients from many backgrounds who have a wide range of conditions. Family medicine also gives me the flexibility to develop new areas of interest throughout my career and pursue them more deeply as my practice evolves.
Q: What else would you like people to know about you as a healthcare professional?
A: I want my patients to know that I will advocate for them and keep their best interests at the center of their care. I take seriously the trust that patients place in me as their physician, and I want each person to feel heard, respected and confident that we are working together toward the best possible outcome for their health.
