Minimally Invasive Bunion Correction Surgery

If you’re living with bunion pain or stiffness, the experts at Orthopaedics NorthEast (ONE) have a minimally invasive option for bunion correction that may be effective in helping you reduce your pain and regain your mobility. This innovative procedure, which works to realign the bony structures of your big toe, is performed through tiny incisions. Because the procedure is truly minimally invasive, patients are generally able to recover faster with less pain and more natural motion. On average, patients can recover up to eight weeks faster compared to traditional bunion correction surgery.

The procedure, which can be performed at Parkview Ortho Hospital or SurgeryONE, is considered outpatient. Most patients will be able to go home the day of surgery and will be able to walk that day without the need of crutches or a knee scooter. As the only practice group in the region to perform this innovative procedure, ONE is uniquely equipped to help you get back to life as soon as possible.

Your healthcare provider can help you decide if this minimally invasive surgery is right for you.

What is bunion correction surgery?

With traditional bunion correction surgery, incisions are made in a patient’s foot to allow the surgeon to realign and correct the deformity using metal screws. However, minimally invasive bunion correction surgery utilizes tiny 1/8” to ½” incisions to realign your bones to their correct anatomical position with minimal damage to the surrounding tissues.

What are the benefits of minimally invasive surgery?

Because minimally invasive procedures use fewer and smaller incisions than traditional surgery, there are many benefits for the patient. With this minimally invasive bunion correction procedure, patients can typically expect to experience a decreased risk of infection, faster recovery time, less pain and more natural range of motion.

What is the recovery like?

Most patients who receive minimally invasive bunion correction surgery will go home the day of surgery. After 2 – 4 weeks, you will most likely be able to walk with full or partial weight bearing. At 6 – 8 weeks, you may be able to begin light exercise. And at 12 – 16 weeks, you can typically expect to resume your normal activities.
