Tour the Parkview Safety Store

Last Modified: May 08, 2019

Riding your bike is great way to be environmentally friendly, get in your exercise and save money on gas but cyclists need to make sure safety is a priority. May is National Bike Month and many of us know that a properly fitting bike helmet is an essential accessory for preventing injury, but few realize that this and other items are available at a discounted price at the Parkview Safety Store, located across the street from Parkview Hospital Randallia. Lauren Quandt, injury prevention and pediatric trauma coordinator, Parkview Trauma Services, gives us a tour of this hidden gem, including an inventory of what shoppers can expect.

What are the most popular items?

Bicycle helmets and Don’t Text & Drive gear are the most popular items sold at the Parkview Safety Store. Each year, thousands of helmets are sold or given away at community events in effort to promote safety.

Helmet safety

It’s important to wear a properly fitted helmet to avoid possible injury. All staff members at the Safety Store are trained to fit and check helmets according to recommendations established by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Why did Parkview create the store?

The Parkview Safety Store was created when we realized there was a need for a storage space to store the large number of helmets we were purchasing at safety events. Soon, our needs increased to fitting and routinely providing helmets at a low cost to the community. Several injury prevention campaigns were added to the Parkview Trauma program requiring more supplies and space for Don't Text & Drive and Share the Road material. The store was first located on State Blvd. and moved to its current location in Carew Medical Park, offering routine weekly hours.

Any new offerings this year?

In early 2018, gunlocks were added to the list of items sold at the Parkview Safety Store at the request of Tony GiaQuinta, MD, PPG – Pediatrics, who recognized a need in the community.

You can stop by the Parkview Safety Store to purchase your helmets, reflective gear and more during our hours of operation. Have a fun, safe summer, everyone!
