Frequently asked questions

If your questions aren’t listed, be sure to ask your doctor.

When can I get pregnant?

You can get pregnant any day of the month, even during your period. Women can even get pregnant while on birth control or using protection.

Am I pregnant?

The only way to know for sure if you are pregnant is to take a pregnancy test. Many over-the-counter tests are available, but are not accurate until about two weeks after your missed period. If you have a positive test, call your doctor and schedule an appointment.

What are early symptoms of pregnancy?

Not everyone has pregnancy symptoms, but some women do. Here are some common symptoms:

  • Missing one or more menstrual periods
  • Spotting and cramping
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Breast changes (swelling and soreness)

What should I do if my pregnancy test is positive?

If your pregnancy test is positive, you should make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible. Do not wait until you are showing. You will want to know for sure if you are pregnant, and you want to make sure you take good care of yourself and your baby.

Can I smoke while I’m pregnant?

No. You should not smoke while you’re pregnant because it will hurt your unborn baby. Your baby breathes what you breathe. When you talk to your doctor at your first prenatal appointment, be sure to mention that you smoke. Research shows that mothers who smoke have a greater chance of miscarriage, stillbirth, having a premature baby or having a baby that dies early in life from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Will drinking alcohol hurt my baby?

Yes, drinking alcohol can hurt your baby. Remember that whatever goes into your body affects your baby. You should not drink while you are pregnant because it leads to birth defects, learning disabilities, behavioral problems and mental retardation.
