skin damage

Numerous things cause our skin to age, from our genes and the natural aging process to our environment and lifestyle choices. They all affect our skin and its youthful appearance. Valerie Klee, an aesthetician with Radiance Plastic Surgery, Aesthetics & Skincare, helps us navigate some common skincare quandaries while also sharing a few tricks of the trade on preventing, slowing, and in some cases, reversing the signs of skin damage and aging.

What are the first signs that your skin has suffered damage from the sun?

While the sun offers many health benefits, it can prematurely age your skin. Some of the telltale signs of sun damage can include:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Discoloration (hyperpigmentation or vascular redness)
  • Excessive dryness
Is it possible to reverse the signs of aging or sun damage?

I wouldn’t go as far as to say reverse, but you can definitely improve your skin and slow down the progressive signs of aging. The best ways to go about this include medical-grade skincare products, prescription hydroquinone to treat pigmentation (dark spots or patches), intense pulsed light (IPL) laser treatments and chemical peels. You could also consider adding retinol or medical-grade skincare and procedures to your normal regimen.

Is there a way to effectively remove or reduce the look of acne scarring?

Whether you have raised or sunken acne scars, you can take steps to minimize the look of them. The first action would be to consult a dermatologist. They can help you formulate a plan to get your acne under control. Later, they will likely explore two main treatment options with you to help reduce the acne scarring: chemical peels and/or laser treatments.

What’s the best way to prolong healthier, younger looking skin?

One of the bests ways to protect and prolong healthy-looking skin is to adopt a regular skincare routine and stick to it. Aside from that, wearing sunscreen, hydrating regularly, and utilizing medical-grade treatments and procedures can also give you a leg up in maintaining a youthful appearance.
