Safety & Prevention

When we think about the hazards farmers encounter, accidental poisoning isn't typically top of mind. In reality, there are many chemicals used and stored on a farm and it's important to follow the proper procedures to keep everyone safe.  As we continue National Farm Safety and Health Week, Steve Engleking, agriculture and natural resources educator, Purdue Extension — LaGrange County, has some tips for staying safe around chemicals.

A few additional tips to help avoid accidental poisoning:

  • Read and follow all directions on all labels before you use a product.
  • If you find an unlabeled container, don't guess what's in it. Throw it away.
  • Keep containers clean and dry so that the label continues to be easy to read.
  • Discuss chemical use and label instructions with everyone on the farm, including hired workers and family members.
