Total Vascular Screening

Poor blood flow in any part of the body can increase an individual’s risk of heart attack or stroke. Vascular screenings are non-invasive tests that identify blood flow in the arteries. These tests are now conveniently available at Parkview hospitals throughout northeast Indiana.

Should you have a total vascular screening? Certain lifestyle habits increase your risk for developing vascular disease. The total vascular screening, including the following three tests, can be completed in approximately 30 minutes. Screenings are available without a physician referral.

• Carotid artery screening is a duplex ultrasound of the carotid arteries, the vessels that supply blood to the brain. This screen can detect the presence of carotid stenosis (or narrowing of the arteries), the most frequent cause of stroke.
• The ABI screening measures blood pressure at the ankle while a person is at rest. This test detects the presence and severity of peripheral artery disease in the arteries of the legs and/or feet.
• Abdominal aortic screening is a duplex ultrasound scan of the abdominal aorta, the largest artery of the body. The abdominal aorta is most prone to an aneurysm.
