The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck, but it influences nearly every system in the body. It produces hormones that help regulate metabolism, body temperature, heart rate, energy levels, digestion, mood, menstrual cycles and more. A wide range of lifestyle, nutritional and environmental factors can affect thyroid function.

These nutrients are essential for making and activating thyroid hormones.
Iodine
Iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production. Too little iodine can contribute to hypothyroidism, goiter, and—in pregnancy—developmental concerns for the baby. However, too much iodine may also trigger thyroid imbalance in some people, especially those who are prone to autoimmune thyroid disease. Because iodine needs vary by age, pregnancy status, and diet, supplements should be used thoughtfully rather than automatically.
Notable food sources: Seaweed, iodized salt, dairy, fish
Selenium
Selenium helps convert thyroxine (T4) to the biologically active triiodothyronine (T3). Selenium deficiency has been linked to elevated levels of thyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibodies and an increased risk of Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
Notable food sources: Brazil nuts, seafood, eggs
Zinc
Zinc is required for the synthesis and pituitary release of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) as well as for TSH receptor binding at the thyroid gland level. It also supports conversion of T4 to T3. Zinc deficiency is associated with decreased serum thyroid hormones.
Notable food sources: Oysters, beef, pumpkin seeds
Iron
Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) is an iron-dependent heme enzyme, and iron deficiency impairs TPO activity. Iron deficiency is particularly common in menstruating females and is a clinically significant, modifiable variable.
Notable food sources: Red meat, legumes, leafy greens
Vitamin D
Vitamin D functions as an immunomodulatory hormone; deficiency is linked to a higher prevalence of autoimmune thyroid diseases, including both Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease. Low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels are significantly correlated with elevated levels of thyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibodies.
Notable food sources: Fatty fish, fortified foods, sunlight
Magnesium
Magnesium plays a regulatory role in hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis signaling. It participates in the conversion of T4 to T3 and may impair thyroid hormone production when chronically deficient. Stress and dietary factors can deplete this mineral. Because of modern farming practices, food grown in poor-quality soil may not be as magnesium-rich as it once was.
Notable food sources: Leafy greens, nuts, seeds
What gets in the way
Some everyday exposures can interfere with thyroid function.
- Toxins: Pesticides, plastics, heavy metals (mercury, cadmium, lead) interfere with thyroid receptor binding and enzyme activity.
- Chronic stress and trauma: Elevated cortisol inhibits conversion of T4 to T3.
- Gluten: In individuals with Hashimoto's thyroiditis who also have concurrent celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity, gluten ingestion may exacerbate autoimmune activity through molecular mimicry and immune activation mechanisms. A strict gluten-free diet has demonstrated benefit in reducing TPO antibodies and normalizing asymptomatic thyroid dysfunction in the specific subpopulation with both celiac disease and autoimmune thyroid disease.
Daily lifestyle habits that help
Small lifestyle shifts can make a real difference.
- Manage stress and prioritize sleep: High cortisol suppresses thyroid output. Stress management, prioritizing balance and adequate sleep can help restore the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis.
- Move your body: Moderate exercise supports thyroid health, improving metabolic rate and enhancing peripheral conversion of T4 to T3.
- Eat enough and a balanced diet: Very low-calorie diets lower active T3. Adequate nourishment with a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and phytonutrients provides the energy for thyroid hormone production and reduces systemic inflammation and autoimmune activity.
- Support your gut: About 20% of thyroid activation happens there! The gut microbiome plays an active role in thyroid hormone balance. Diet and lifestyle approaches for maintaining a balanced gut include eating whole foods, plenty of fiber and fermented foods when tolerated.
- Avoid toxins: Make smart household swaps to limit exposure to substances like PFAS, found in non-stick cookware, and BPA in plastics.

Integrative and functional medicine emphasizes a systems-based approach to thyroid health—addressing nutrient deficiencies, reducing toxic exposures, gut support, sleep and managing stress. This holistic model aligns with emerging research showing that thyroid dysfunction often reflects broader metabolic and immune dysregulation rather than isolated glandular disease.
