You may have seen recently that the USDA released new dietary guidelines. I'm here today to talk about some of the common misconceptions.

First, let’s address saturated fat. Yes, these new dietary guidelines do include full-fat dairy as well as options for healthy fat, such as beef tallow. I want to make it clear that these guidelines maintain previous guideline recommendations of no more than 10% of our daily intake of fat from saturated fat.

Moving on to whole grains. While, like previous recommendations, these guidelines, say half of your grains should be whole grains, they also emphasize limiting refined grain. This includes white bread, which has a far lower fiber content than whole grains.

New guidelines still recommend limiting sugar-sweetened beverages as well as artificial sweetened beverages.

Within the new guidelines, the protein intake per average American has increased, but it's important to note that protein needs vary by individual.

If you want a specialized plan for following a certain diet, it's important that you reach out to a registered dietician for the best guidance for you. Also, be careful getting your dietary information online, as advice varies widely. Look for reputable sources before making any decisions.
