Parenting is by far the most difficult and most rewarding job that most of us will ever do. Being a parent will challenge you in ways that you never imagined, often putting you in unchartered territory. We all want what is best for our kids, and often worry if we are doing everything right.

Parenting stress is incredibly common, but there are some helpful tips that can help you navigate even the most difficult situations with your kids.

  • First, never discipline when you are angry. When we are angry, we often make poor choices and may say things that we later regret. Instead, model giving yourself space to calm down and revisit the discussion when you are more levelheaded.

  • Second, be consistent with something small versus inconsistent with something big. This applies to both rewards and consequences. Mean what you say and do what you say you will do.

  • Third, think ahead and be prepared to handle misbehavior. Make sure your kids know the expectations and the consequences of not meeting them. This can alleviate stress in the moment.

  • Fourth, remember, it is our kids' job to test boundaries. This is actually a very healthy part of developing independence. It is our job as parents to teach them where the boundaries are so that they can be successful in life.
