Caroline Braun, LCSW, LCAC, Parkview Behavioral Health Institute, explains how stress and exhaustion can impact our daily lives and how to differentiate between conditions.

If you've been telling yourself you're just stressed, but rest isn't helping, this might explain why. Stress, feeling overwhelmed, and burnout feel similar but are different, and knowing the difference helps you get the right support.

  • Stress is having a lot on your plate but still feeling capable.

  • Feeling overwhelmed is when that load feels unmanageable and everything seems urgent.

  • Burnout is deep exhaustion that doesn't go away with rest. It is often paired with numbness, irritability or disconnection from things you used to care about.

Why it matters

To combat stress, you may need short breaks or problem-solving. When you're overwhelmed, prioritization and simplification often help. Burnout usually needs real rest, boundaries and sometimes professional support.

If pushing through isn't working, that's not failure. It's a signal to adjust what kind of support you're using.
