How to live well in today’s world
Today’s world can be challenging. We have demands at work and home and with our friends and family. How can you make the most of life without sacrificing your physical and mental well-being?
Here are a few tips to help you find balance in your life:
Build a support system.
Most people turn to support systems in times of need – and they should be in place before you need them. Make an effort to get to know your neighbors. Volunteer your time with a community organization that shares your values.
Move every day.
Daily exercise can help improve your mood, decrease your stress levels and give you a tremendous feeling of well-being. Even a little activity can go a long way. Keep an extra pair of athletic shoes under your desk and take a 10-minute walk at lunch. Join a class at a local gym. Recruit friends to join you in training for a race.
Remember to laugh.
Some say it’s the best medicine. Think of funny thoughts. Surround yourself with people who know how to joke and have fun. Remember to laugh at yourself.
Take time to relax.
You may think you don’t deserve a break, so you ignore your body’s signals that it’s time to relax. Know the warning signals your body gives off when you are stressed (fatigue, headaches, irritability, insomnia, increased pain, etc.). Take action before you reach your maximum stress capacity. Consider taking a vacation, reading, watching television, knitting, baking or taking a walk.
Find time for yourself – and your goals.
Are you allowing yourself to experience fun, joy, freedom and empowerment? If not, now is the time. Make a bucket list. Take up a new hobby. Go back to school and pursue a degree. Fill your time with the things and friends you love.
Make time for your spiritual life.
Nurture yourself with laughter and relaxation and through your spiritual life. Pray or meditate.
