​At Parkview Whitley Hospital and Parkview Warsaw, we offer a variety of childbirth, parenting and breastfeeding classes to help give you the support you need during and after your pregnancy. If you attend prenatal or parenting classes, you will receive a coupon for B.A.B.E. of Whitley County, a Columbia City agency providing parenting support and child wellness services. Coupons may be redeemed for baby supplies or clothing at B.A.B.E. of Whitley County, 533 N. Line St., Columbia City. 

Parkview Whitley Hospital is the certified car seat safety check point for Whitley County. Any parent or grandparent who would like a free car seat safety check should call (260) 248-9321.

Preparing for Childbirth

Parkview offers a one-day or three-session prenatal education class. Partners are encouraged to attend. To help you prepare for childbirth, this class covers the following:

  • Process of labor and birth
  • Relaxation and breathing techniques
  • Pain management options
  • Physical and emotional changes

Basic and Beyond Parenting

This class is designed to help you feel more confident by teaching you basic parenting skills and more. Partners are encouraged to attend this class, which covers topics such as:

  • Infant care skills
  • Calming a crying baby
  • Protecting your child
  • Choosing a care provider
  • Understanding infant sleep patterns
  • Breastfeeding skills and bottle-feeding
  • Car seat safety

The American Heart Association® Family & Friends® Infant and Child CPR and relief from choking course will be taught during the third class of the session. A free portable crib, crib sheet, swaddler and pacifiers will be given to those who qualify. Any woman in her last trimester of pregnancy, or who has an infant, is welcome to attend.

Breastfeeding Class

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for the first 12 months of life. Taught by a certified lactation consultant, this one-time class is highly recommended if you are considering breastfeeding your baby. Partners are encouraged to attend. This class covers:

  • Benefits of breastfeeding
  • Correct positioning and latching
  • Pumping and storing breast milk
  • Common concerns and questions
