Dr. Donald Urban
Dr. Donald A. Urban has devoted his 24-year career in urology to using advanced surgical techniques to treat prostate and kidney cancers and treating other urologic conditions.
Dr. Urban was among the first urology surgeons to use laparoscopic, minimally invasive surgery in the early 1990s and was an early adopter of daVinci robot-assisted surgery. He has performed more than 500 robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomies. Dr. Urban also has performed more than 200 robot-assisted nephrectomies, partial nephrectomies, and other complex reconstructive surgeries. He completed specialized training in laparoscopic surgery at Washington University in St. Louis and was certified in daVinci robotic surgery in 2002. Dr. Urban participates in robotic surgery training programs to remain current in new advances in nerve-sparing surgery techniques.
Dr. Urban is medical director of urologic robotic surgery and chairman of the robotic surgery leadership committee at Parkview Hospital. Prior to coming to Fort Wayne in 2007, he developed the urology robotic surgery program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham medical center, where he served as associate professor and director of the multidisciplinary prostate cancer clinic. As a faculty member at UAB, Dr. Urban taught surgical skills to physicians-in-training and conducted research on cancer prevention and improving surgical outcomes.
Dr. Urban has been a leader in developing national standards for cancer care. He was a co-author on the 2007 National Comprehensive Cancer Network Clinical Practice Guidelines for Prostate Cancer and has presented papers on prostate cancer prevention, treatment, and surgery at national and international academic conferences. His research has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Denison University, Dr. Urban earned his M.D. degree at the University of Cincinnati and completed his residency at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to being board certified in urology, he is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and has been active in the Society of Urologic Oncology and the American Urological Association.
