The Family Hour
The hour after your baby is born is a special time. Here, we call it “The Family Hour.” Your time together is customized to enhance your birthing experience and we want you to enjoy it. We set aside a full 60 minutes of bonding time, just for you and your baby. It's a quiet hour filled with gentle lullabies and soothing aromatherapy provided by the hospital — the perfect “welcome to the world” for your little one.
Choose from options such as:
- Mom, baby and coach only (no visitors)
- Limited visitors (immediate family)
- No restriction on visitors
- Lights dimmed
- Aromatherapy
- Relaxing background music
- Lullaby CD
- Cuddling and holding baby
- Initiating breastfeeding during the hour
Safe Slumber
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that no loose bedding or blankets be used for children under the age of one, because fluffy bedding and fabric objects close to a baby’s face can block breathing. Because we at Parkview want to help keep babies safe, we launched the Safe Slumber program in 2009. Parkview is the only health system in the region using the Safe Slumber program.
All Parkview Family Birthing Centers have eliminated baby blankets from their nurseries and are now swaddling infants in sleep sacks instead. The soft cotton sleep sack keeps each baby cozy and secure without fabric bunching up near his or her face. The sack:
- Allows the baby’s legs room to move
- Zips up to the neckline in the front
- Enfolds the baby’s arms across his or her body with side flaps
In addition, Parkview has teamed up with First Candle* to become a distribution center for safe, portable cribs for parents who do not have a safe place for their baby to sleep and might not otherwise be able to afford them. Applicants must show financial need and are required to complete the ‘Bedtime Basics for Babies’ crib class — a two-hour course. Parents and expecting parents interested in the program should call:

Infant Protection System
To guard your baby’s safety, the Parkview Family Birthing Centers are equipped with a truly advanced infant protection system. You and your baby will wear a tiny tag monitored at all times by the system, so you can be confident that your little one is close by, snug and secure. Our protection system adds an extra layer of protection by alerting staff when either tag is loose and playing a lullaby when you and your baby’s tags are a confirmed match.
Arrange a private tour
To see all the features awaiting you at Parkview, you’re invited to tour a Family Birthing Center near you. In Fort Wayne, you have two state-of-the-art Family Birthing Centers to choose from — Parkview Hospital-Randallia, or Parkview Women’s & Children’s Hospital, located on the Parkview Regional Medical Center campus. Both offer advanced care in a warm, nurturing environment. Whichever location you choose, we want you to think of it as your home away from home — a family-centered place where you can deliver your baby with care from experts who know how to give little ones a good start in life.

Infant car seats
Indiana law states you must protect your baby by using an approved car seat. The staff of the Parkview Family Birthing Center encourages you to use the car seat for your baby's first ride home and every time thereafter. Car seats are available at cost to new parents who need them.
