Outstanding stroke care

Parkview Hospital is proud to be the home of northeast Indiana’s first primary stroke center, The Parkview Stanley Wissman Stroke Center, accredited by The Joint Commission. This designation indicates that medical professionals who can intervene to treat a stroke patient are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and that the quality of care provided meets rigorous national standards.

The Parkview Stanley Wissman Stroke Center devotes its resources to the full range of stroke experience – before, during and after:

Community outreach
Education is the most powerful means of preventing strokes and reducing stroke-related deaths and disabilities. Stroke center staff members work to educate the general public, especially people who are at higher risk for stroke due to their genetic background, age or lifestyle. In addition, stroke center staff educate physicians, EMS professionals and other medical specialists.

A resource for stroke care professionals
The Stanley Wissman Stroke Center’s data registry provides a means for physicians and medical researchers to track various forms of stroke – as well as target populations most susceptible to stroke – in order to educate potential stroke victims and reduce the occurrence of stroke.

Rapid-response teams for the best outcomes for patients
An average stroke kills more than 1 million brain cells each minute, increasing the likelihood of disability or even death. Working with the Parkview Samaritan Flight Program, the Parkview stroke team employs the latest techniques to expedite delivery of lifesaving care.

Innovative treatment techniques and research

  • Telemedicine and the StrokeCareNow Network – Parkview employs telemedicine robots to enable physicians treating patients at other hospitals to consult stroke center  physicians and collaborate on treatment decisions.
  • Stroke research – The Parkview Research Center has been in the thick of stroke research since 1993, contributing to national studies and  investigating “clot-busting” drugs and stents. Stroke center patients benefit from innovations and are able to participate in new studies.

Rehabilitation following stroke
Parkview rehabilitation professionals – 15 of whom are now certified by the Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialists – assess available therapies and assistive equipment on an ongoing basis, incorporating new choices into treatment plans. For instance, patients have the opportunity to boost function in weakened arms and legs with equipment by a leading manufacturer of advanced technology devices.
