Fort Wayne, Ind. – Thursday, March 29, 2012 — Parkview today joined the Child Life Council in observing Child Life Month. Each March is set aside to honor child life specialists and increase awareness about their important work in hospitals.
Colleen Banta serves as the child life specialist at Parkview.
Child life specialists are trained professionals with expertise in helping children and their families overcome some of life’s most challenging events.
Child life specialists focus on the needs of children and collaborate with family members to:
*Ease a child’s fear and anxiety
*Encourage understanding and cooperation
*Engage and energize
*Consider the needs of siblings or other children who may also be affected by a child’s illness
*Provide education and resources
Also today, children receiving care in Parkview’s Pediatrics Department received gifts from the Walt Disney Company. Each spring, Disney provides care packages to hospitals across the country as part of its ongoing commitment to share resources to strengthen communities, and to support the well-being of kids and families. The care packages are filled with toys, books and videos to name a few. This year’s Disney program will reach more than 500 hospitals around the world.
