Community Harvest & PLH partner to feed hungry

5/14/2009

Beginning Monday, May 18, LaGrange County residents will have another resource for those families struggling to make ends meet. Parkview LaGrange Hospital has agreed to partner with Community Harvest Food Bank to host the Community Harvest Farm Wagon every Monday at 2:30pm. The Farm Wagon is stocked with a mix of fresh produce, and perishable and shelf-stable food. People who visit the Farm Wagon may select the food of their choice - no questions asked.

“When we approached Parkview LaGrange Hospital about this opportunity they wanted to start it immediately,” said Jane Avery, Executive Director, Community Harvest Food Bank. “We couldn’t be happier to join forces with Parkview again to help feed hungry people. The residents in LaGrange are in such a difficult situation right now. The unemployment rate is staggering. Combining resources is one of the ways we can help. This makes our 31st Farm Wagon site and we’re looking to add more with varied hours all over our nine county service area to make it easier for folks to access food assistance. Our hat goes off to Parkview for its commitment to helping the people in the communities they serve,” said Avery.

Community Harvest Farm Wagon will visit Parkview LaGrange Hospital, 207 N. Townline Road, LaGrange, IN every Monday at 2:30pm. The truck will be parked on the north side circle drive. It is suggested those interested arrive 30 minutes prior to the truck’s arrival and bring their own containers.

“People here in LaGrange County are facing difficult circumstances on a daily basis as a result of the hundreds of job losses that have occurred here,” said Rob Myers, chief operating officer for Parkview LaGrange Hospital. “We’re very happy to work collaboratively with the Community Harvest Food Bank to help make this service available to the people in our community.”

To date in the last year the Community Harvest Farm Wagon has distributed 1,604,107 pounds of food to 65,609 households totaling 209,481 individuals.

Community Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Indiana, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the alleviation of hunger through the full use of donated food and other resources. As the largest food bank in northeast Indiana, it collects and distributes over 10 million pounds of donated, surplus food annually through a network of human service member agencies. These agencies offer assistance to hungry people, acting as a safety net to ensure that everyone receives their daily bread with dignity. www.chfb.org
