New program keeps newborns safe

1/13/2009

A new Parkview Huntington Hospital program, called “Safe Slumber,” promotes safe sleep and educates parents about the importance of a safe sleep environment for infants.

Sleep sacks are used at Parkview Huntington Hospital as well as at all other Parkview Health hospitals. Newborns no longer are swaddled in blankets. Sleep sacks keep a baby warm and comfortable and eliminate the presence of loose fabric around a child’s face. The best way for babies to sleep is on their backs in a crib free of fabrics and objects that can block their mouth and nose.

A sleep sack is sent home with parents, who receive education about safe sleep practices while at the respective Family Birthing Centers throughout the Parkview Health system.

“Safe Slumber” is made possible through donor gifts to the Family Birthing Center fund at each Parkview Foundation office throughout the Parkview Health system. For information on becoming a donor to the “Safe Slumber” program, call the Parkview Huntington Hospital Foundation at (260) 355-3316.
