Parkview offers free prostate screenings

8/16/2009

Event to be held at Parkview Field Aug. 21

Fort Wayne, Ind. – Monday, August 17, 2009 — Parkview’s Comprehensive Cancer Center will offer free prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screens for men 40 and older on Friday, Aug. 21.

The location for the screenings will be Parkview Field in the Fort Wayne TinCaps Conference Room, 1301 Ewing St. Screenings will be held from noon to 3 p.m. for men not attending that evening’s TinCaps game. Screenings will be held from 6-9 p.m. for men attending that evening’s TinCaps game. For an appointment, call 888-780-3505.

PSA screens are also available from 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19 at the Fort Wayne African American Cancer Alliance at the Lafayette Medical Center, 2700 S. Lafayette St. No appointment is needed. For information about this location, call (260) 399-6461.

The PSA screen, a simple blood test, detects potential problems in the prostate gland by measuring the amount of PSA in a man’s blood. The test can provide early detection and improve chances for surviving prostate cancer. If detected early, before spreading outside the prostate gland, prostate cancer is treatable and curable. Confidential test results will be sent directly to the patient and their physician.

Men who have previously had PSA screens should establish a relationship with their family physician or urologist for a digital rectal exam and ongoing yearly follow-up.
